چکیده

To clarify the cellular immune condition in Japanese Black (JB) calves with a weak syndrome, peripheral leukocyte populations were analyzed by flow cytometry. Twenty JB calves were divided into two groups based on clinical observations; one group of calves was weak, because they had experienced an onset of diarrhea within 3 days after birth and needed treatment (Group 1 ;n=10), and the other group of calves was healthy (Group 2; n=10). With regard to leukocyte populations, CD8(+) cells and gamma delta T cells in Group 1 were markedly lower than those in Group 2 during the experimental periods. It is possible that immune-insufficiency might be based on T lymphocyte function in weak syndrome JB calves during the growth process.

Effect of supplemental vitamin E on the peripheral blood leukocyte population in Japanese Black calves

We investigated the effect of supplemental vitamin E on the peripheral blood leukocyte population in Japanese Black calves. Twenty-six calves kept at the same farm were studied. They were divided into two groups; thirteen calves received 300 IU/day of vitamin E orally from 1 to 3 months of age (VE group), and the other thirteen calves did not receive the vitamin E supplement (control group). Th...

Maternal Effects of Japanese Shorthorn Cows on the Growth of Embryo-transferred Japanese Black Calves in a Cow-calf Grazing System

The growth performance of embryo-transferred Japanese Black calves that were born from, and suckled by, Japanese Shorthorn cows in a cow-calf grazing system (BS-group, n = 5) was compared to that of Japanese Black calves from Japanese Black cows in a cowshed (BB-group, n = 5). The daily weight gain from birth to 1 month was higher in the BS-group than in the BB-group (p<0.01), and the same tren...

Effects of replacement of native fat in colostrum and milk with coconut oil on fat-soluble vitamins in serum and immune function in calves.

Fat-soluble vitamins and their metabolites modulate immune function in a variety of animal species. The objective of the present study was to determine the role of fat-soluble vitamins in colostrum and milk in the development of specific aspects of immune function in the calf during the 1st wk postpartum. During this period, control calves (n = 6) were fed normal colostrum and milk, and calves ...

Induction of twinning in Holstein and Japanese Black cows by ipsilateral frozen embryo transfer

Induction of twinning by ipsilateral nonsurgical transfer of two frozen-thawed Japanese Black bovine embryos to each of 20 Holstein and 26 Japanese Black cows, that had been kept under a stable in private farm conditions, was examined. The cows were monitored every 20 days from Day 2.5 to Day 65 of gestation for pregnancy and fetus survival (estrus is Day 0). Seventy-five per cent ( 1.5 of 20),...

Mapping and Exome Sequencing Identifies a Mutation in the IARS Gene as the Cause of Hereditary Perinatal Weak Calf Syndrome

We identified an IARS (isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase) c.235G>C (p.Val79Leu) substitution as the causative mutation for neonatal weakness with intrauterine growth retardation (perinatal weak calf syndrome). In Japanese Black cattle, the syndrome was frequently found in calves sired by Bull A. Hence, we employed homozygosity mapping and linkage analysis. In order to identify the perinatal weak calf s...
